For adolescents, scoliosis can impact daily activities, physical performance, and emotional well-being, making it important to address early on with proper care and support.  If you notice any of these signs, it's important to consult a healthcare professional to assess your adolescent's spine and determine if scoliosis is present. Early detection can help prevent further complications.  Here are some things that you can look for, check or ask about.

Adams Test - Have your child bend over like they are touching their toes, preferably without a shirt so you can have full view of their spine, Once they are bent over, ask them to slowly start to come back up to standing, watch what their spine does.  If you notice anything unusual, like one side being more prominent than the other, this might be an indication something is going on.

Uneven shoulders: One shoulder appears higher than the other, or the shoulder blades may stick out more prominently on one side.
Uneven hips or pelvis: One hip may be higher or more pronounced than the other when standing.
Leaning to one side: Noticeable tilting of the body or the adolescent consistently leaning to one side when standing or sitting.
Asymmetrical ribcage: A noticeable difference in the shape or size of the ribcage on one side, often seen when bending forward (this is known as the "rib hump").
Back pain: Complaints of persistent back, neck, or shoulder pain, especially after physical activities or long periods of sitting.
Postural changes: Slouching, or a noticeable curve in the spine when viewed from the side or back.
Difficulty with physical activities: Struggling with certain movements, like bending, twisting, or sports performance, due to stiffness or discomfort.
Clothing fit: Clothes may appear uneven or not fit properly because of the uneven body alignment (e.g., pants or shirts fitting differently on one side).
Fatigue: Excessive tiredness or discomfort after physical activities due to muscle strain from uneven body mechanics.
Breathing issues: In severe cases, difficulty breathing or a feeling of shortness of breath during physical exertion.
